Do you love new glasses as much as I do? My favorite way to buy <a href="https://www.glassesshop.com/" target="_blank">prescription glasses</a> is through online glasses shops. This pair is from <b>GlassesShop.Com</b><br />
<br />

I have ordered from several <a href="https://www.glassesshop.com/" target="_blank">online glasses shops</a> and this pair from <b>GlassesShop.com</b> is one of my favorites. The frame is sturdy and the hinges are tight. My frame is missing one rhinestone on the temple but it's not noticeable. I'm a sucker for a nice cat-eye <a href="https://www.glassesshop.com/" target="_blank">glasses frame</a> and think that this pair is the perfect size.<br />

After I went back to work 5 years ago, my sewing and pattern testing has slowed down. I've been able to test 4 patterns in the past 2 months, so my machines have been getting a good workout. Here are a few in the works....<br />

And here are two that have been published, the<a href="http://www.patternsforpirates.com/product/slim-fit-raglan/" target="_blank"> Slim Fit Raglan</a> from Patterns for Pirates and the <a href="http://www.eymm.com/product/parkers-for-men-xxs-6xl/" target="_blank">Parker Vintage Tee for men</a> at Everything Your Mama Made. The exciting thing about the EYMM pattern is it's the first PDF pattern I've found that fits my 4xl tall husband! The pattern goes up to 6 xl Tall and has crew and V-neck options as well as long or short sleeves. You know P4P has amazing womens patterns and the Slim fit Raglan is one to add to your collection!</div>

March's theme for <a href="http://sew-not-perfect.blogspot.com/2015/03/march.html" target="_blank">Sew Your Pattern Stash</a> has been Dresses and Skirts. I was hoping to make a <a href="https://www.sisboom.com/store/patterns/angie-dress-pdf-pattern-for-women/" target="_blank">Sisboom Angie</a>, <a href="https://www.sisboom.com/store/patterns/jamie-dress-pdf-pattern-for-women/" target="_blank">Sisboom Jamie</a> and<a href="http://www.ellieinspired.com/index.php?id_product=129&controller=product" target="_blank"> Ellie Inspired Spring Lily</a>, but work and illness have kept me away from the sewing machine. I was able to make a Jamie dress this week and am very happy with the result. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.sisboom.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/JamieDressPatternCover-307x424.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://www.sisboom.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/JamieDressPatternCover-307x424.jpg" width="231" /></a></div>
<div align="left">

<div align="left">
This Jamie took about 6 hours from cutting to sewing. It was a simple dress and would be suitable for a beginner with some experience. It does have a size zipper and fully lined bodice. The lining is treated as one piece with the outer fabric during construction, so it does not really add to the complexity of the project. This makes the inner dress not as neat as more traditional construction but much faster to sew. </div>

I chose a knee length skirt and added a lining layer since my gingham was very thin. I'd love to try a circle skirt next time to decrease the bulk at my waistline. I love the vintage-vibe of the gingham print, close-fitting bodice and full skirt. I'm looking forward to more Jamies in my wardrobe!</div>

I have made some time for selfish ( self-care) sewing in the past month. I am also continuing to work on the <a href="http://www.coletterie.com/category/wardrobe-architect" target="_blank">Wardrobe Architect</a> from the Colleterie. <br />
<br />
My first sew was the <a href="http://www.jocole.net/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=8_27&products_id=144" target="_blank">Jocole Skinnies Pants</a>. I've had this pattern but have been afraid to try skinnies because of my size. I used my hip measurement and the fit was good. I need to raise the outer hip curve next time but otherwise, fit was spot on. I used stretch denim from the Fashion Fabrics Club and a lycra blend for the waist. I actually feel good wearing them!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiau16s36fAMzhhcYUS4Y16rV6GoEZTCTgQH_G8uvy88_BF8LP5Oqeat5V8d6Gxkme5uZR6ierzDYCZdJZ1J0tjqdn7wgE_eHFC7JjxzFiTqfRO1jezfhH3oiMQVzAyqk7zd-uzH7GpYkg/s1600/IMG_49305462982176.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiau16s36fAMzhhcYUS4Y16rV6GoEZTCTgQH_G8uvy88_BF8LP5Oqeat5V8d6Gxkme5uZR6ierzDYCZdJZ1J0tjqdn7wgE_eHFC7JjxzFiTqfRO1jezfhH3oiMQVzAyqk7zd-uzH7GpYkg/s1600/IMG_49305462982176.jpeg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
I have also been sewing a pajama set that is still in testing. The first pair was with stretch lace and Terry cloth - so comfy! There were some adjustments before making the striped knit pair. This will also have a matching kids pattern. Look for it to be released next week from <a href="http://www.craftsy.com/user/1180184/pattern-store?_ct=fqjjuhd-ijehu&_ctp=128081,1180184" target="_blank">5 out of 4 patterns</a>.<br />

This was a hat I made to wear at my kids school on Read Across America Day back in March 2010. I updated the document links for the pattern pieces. This hat sews up in about an hour, so grab that felt, fabric and sew one for your little reader. <br />
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~<br />
My kids are excited for Dr. Seuss' birthday and Read Across America Day, March 2. Their school is providing green eggs & ham for breakfast and inviting families to come participate in reading programs that day. They have been encouraged to dress like their favorite Dr. Seuss character, so Drew decided he wanted a <i>Cat in the Hat</i> striped hat. Here's the picture I used for my replica:<br />
<br />
1. Cut pieces for hat body: Cut 3 - 3"w x 22"l from Red Felt<br />
Cut 2 - 3"w x 22"l from White Felt<br />
(Cut lining fabric after above pieces sewn together to form hat body) <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnHmGQsQE_KHC4ai5KdQvm4FZrNSo3j4uGUoknogReEIjtIll8gC1s2c3bc5LedYn3BDOgfDbocpcqe03kPdQgd_k9P70Xiqgm5TJ-PAcRyiqcesBMWigy4NIuAX5rZKujtXgvz_6RAJg/s1600-h/IMG_1389.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnHmGQsQE_KHC4ai5KdQvm4FZrNSo3j4uGUoknogReEIjtIll8gC1s2c3bc5LedYn3BDOgfDbocpcqe03kPdQgd_k9P70Xiqgm5TJ-PAcRyiqcesBMWigy4NIuAX5rZKujtXgvz_6RAJg/s320/IMG_1389.JPG" /></a></div>
<br />
2. Starting with a strip of red felt, sew with right sides together alternating between red & white strips.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisYkz3TnolTtSKs2o627dVa6FLarkaVdLCQzHWvx-uGPPQo29X0s9X4QNUQa5MGx2d5Tv83n03KTsqMcaNYMQFefzx9ZHsyvXihOk4DXQlt7Rp-VVm7J3Eyl3Xm67yDEhyphenhyphenJ6ZbQmEkRLg/s1600-h/IMG_1390.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisYkz3TnolTtSKs2o627dVa6FLarkaVdLCQzHWvx-uGPPQo29X0s9X4QNUQa5MGx2d5Tv83n03KTsqMcaNYMQFefzx9ZHsyvXihOk4DXQlt7Rp-VVm7J3Eyl3Xm67yDEhyphenhyphenJ6ZbQmEkRLg/s320/IMG_1390.JPG" /></a></div>
<br />
3. Place hat body onto lining fabric as a template and cut out lining. Baste around all edges, connecting hat body to hat liner. With right sides of hat together, sew up side seam. You now have a tube shape for the completed hat body.<br />
<br />
<br />
Have you heard about the <a href="http://www.coletterie.com/wardrobe-architect/wardrobe-architect-2015" target="_blank">Wardrobe Architect </a>hosted by the Coletterie? It's a guided program to help define your personal style and develop a hand-made wardrobe that you will love wearing. They give monthly projects to help organize and put together your wardrobe. Not everything needs to be new or handmade. Check out January's project list <a href="http://www.coletterie.com/wardrobe-architect/wardrobe-architect-2015" target="_blank">here</a>. <br />
<br />
I like the idea of organizing my wardrobe. I have many pieces that I've made during pattern testing or because the pattern looked great in the listing, only to have them sit in my closet because they don't fit my lifestyle or personal style. The same goes for my girls closet...I think this challenge would be great for me children's wardrobes, too! <br />
<br />
I've recently cut back my hours at work to allow more time at home and sewing! My goal is to be more intentional in my sewing this year and share more projects here on the blog. Hope you follow along and consider joining in! <br />
<br />
It's giveaway week! I have enjoyed <a href="http://www.sewmamasew.com/" target="_blank">SMS Giveaway </a>days for several years and am happy to share a special prize with you. This year, I was a contributor to the newest <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Little-One-Yard-Wonders-Irresistible-Accessories/dp/1612121241/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1418098812&sr=8-1&keywords=9781612121246" target="_blank"><i>Little One Yard Wonders</i> </a>book. Storey Publishing is offering a copy of the <i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Little-One-Yard-Wonders-Irresistible-Accessories/dp/1612121241/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1418098812&sr=8-1&keywords=9781612121246" target="_blank">Little One Yard Wonders</a></i> book to a US reader! <br />
<br />
I contributed the Easy Dolman Top or Tunic. This is an easy top for sizes 4-12 using only 1 yard of fabric. It was based on a tutorial I had previously <a href="http://mamalusco.blogspot.com/2012/03/tutorial-easy-dolman-sleeve-shirt-for.html" target="_blank">published here</a> to draft your own easy dolman top. Feedback has been great for the pattern and book. <br />
<br />
I am excited to be a part of the <a href="http://ebethdesigns.com/" target="_blank">E-beth Designs</a> blog tour for the new <a href="http://ebethdesigns.com/product/lorelei-womens-dress-pattern/" target="_blank">Lorelei Women's Dress</a>! I have made 3 Lorelei's so far, 2 in testing and another just because I love the pattern. Let's get up-close and personal about the Lorelei...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh9Ig2_8rRIPk3SN1cLDVG23vWJ1PRXTtzO27GUVPXnDvRqE8hMGeISs1aa0uK4laX_eb__J96FYIIkVltanlUmzpj31ALO4N_Y38y8t5u_XNe9JdLuFl6eXnEXo6XHOCh_sl03F0tn8o/s1600/IMG_6896.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh9Ig2_8rRIPk3SN1cLDVG23vWJ1PRXTtzO27GUVPXnDvRqE8hMGeISs1aa0uK4laX_eb__J96FYIIkVltanlUmzpj31ALO4N_Y38y8t5u_XNe9JdLuFl6eXnEXo6XHOCh_sl03F0tn8o/s1600/IMG_6896.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This is an elegant, versatile pattern with a huge range of size options. I love that it looks as good on a size 20 as it does on 00. Did you see that <a href="http://fabuloushomesewn.blogspot.com/2014/06/lorelei-dress-blog-tour.html" target="_blank">Fenna even made one</a> that fits at 9 months pregnant?! Bodice pieces are customized to each size and cup size A-DD. It's refreshing to have a pattern this well-fitted just as it's written. Another special bonus is the "layer" printing option. You can select which size to print = no confusion of which line to cut, or select which 2 sizes you need for easy grading between body sizes. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgz7mjDNtgufbRxopVmWvXBJ621nX9og9AIG03txNtlhmhB13JcqqpCcv41ApRulORU-v0bYHRcBS34aWeBvchMw-yajI8BjbwSX_Yntn2aU3a2KNnij9U0hYHJtYMuQpVchyRpo7CX5DQ/s1600/IMG_6795.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgz7mjDNtgufbRxopVmWvXBJ621nX9og9AIG03txNtlhmhB13JcqqpCcv41ApRulORU-v0bYHRcBS34aWeBvchMw-yajI8BjbwSX_Yntn2aU3a2KNnij9U0hYHJtYMuQpVchyRpo7CX5DQ/s1600/IMG_6795.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I learned a few things while testing and sewing the <a href="http://ebethdesigns.com/product/lorelei-womens-dress-pattern/" target="_blank">Lorelei dress</a>.<strong> <em>Lesson #1 - Make a muslin.</em></strong> I was between 18 and 20, so the first muslin was a size 20DD. This picture shows I needed to lower the bust apex dart, move it in and narrow the bodice. Elizabeth suggested sewing down a size and this fixed all the problems! The next 18DD fit great. To make a muslin bodice, no facings, linings or zipper are needed. I even chopped off the skirt at 12" to make my <a href="http://ebethdesigns.com/product/lorelei-womens-dress-pattern/" target="_blank">Lorelei</a> a peplum top - another great way to save fabric! Simply sew and pin where the zipper would be and make any adjustments from there. This muslin fabric was a $1 thrifted bedsheet. I ended up finishing it into a "wearable" muslin and even paired it with a Jocole pencil skirt for my Easter outfit. <br />
Once you have a good-fitting muslin, there is no need to worry while cutting into your fashion fabric. For my second <a href="http://ebethdesigns.com/product/lorelei-womens-dress-pattern/" target="_blank">Lorelei</a>, I used mini-gingham shirting and black broadcloth from my stash. (Did I mention that I live 2 1/2 hours from a Wal-Mart or fabric store?!) I cut the upper 3" off the skirt to make a faux-belt in black fabric, then re-attached it to the main skirt gingham fabric. I also hemmed it shorter, to fall at the knee. <strong><em>Lesson #2 - Learning to use my blind-hem stitch.</em></strong> I've avoided this one out of fear, but with a little practice, it turned out nicely. I found that a longer stitch length helped smooth out the stitch on my machine. Don't fear, just practice before sewing on your dress. <br />
<br />
The dress is fully-lined and has an attached pettiskirt, so it's got a vintage feel. I may use less tulle next time so I'm not quite such a wide-load, but I love the feminine feel of a full skirt!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTtphu1ESbqBTpOHFEu0L4trPBvUzpaX-q_hV95-D3POStm62r7y_lNc1Wc5gIJYNASS0VCws76AWRKZNrw6x2QTy0tvHzbDlXh81n9XIB8qzgh4Zj4Y9iC9RCcJGPb-Dx_zYPDD1Dw4s/s1600/Lorelei+dress+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTtphu1ESbqBTpOHFEu0L4trPBvUzpaX-q_hV95-D3POStm62r7y_lNc1Wc5gIJYNASS0VCws76AWRKZNrw6x2QTy0tvHzbDlXh81n9XIB8qzgh4Zj4Y9iC9RCcJGPb-Dx_zYPDD1Dw4s/s1600/Lorelei+dress+1.jpg" height="320" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
<strong><em>Lesson #3- Learning to use a narrow-hem foot</em></strong>. I wanted another peplum top for the blog tour, so I made a dressy little top from some semi-sheer poly from my stash. I've found it helpful to slow down when sewing slippery fabrics and my machine has Turtle-speed which works great. Also be sure to use a fine needle when sewing light-weight fashion fabrics. <a href="http://ebethdesigns.com/product/lorelei-womens-dress-pattern/" target="_blank">Lorelei</a> #3 came together in about 4 hours. Next time, I'll cut my peplum skirt lining 2" shorter than my main skirting - my lining is peeking out in a few photos. I wasn't following the tutorial on this one and inserted the zipper below the yoke, so I added a hook closure at the top. The narrow-hem foot was a God-send for this fabric! It curls your fabric into a narrow hem - no ironing or pinning! I wish I had tried it sooner. My newer Janome didn't come with this attachment, but a generic vintage low-shank attachment worked just fine.<br />
My youngest daughter, Mallory, picks the book <em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/West-Texas-Chili-Monster-Judy/dp/0816773173" target="_blank">The West Texas Chili Monster by Judy Cox</a></em> every time she finds it at the library. It was an instant favorite at age 3 and still is at age 6. The story begins with a widow named Mama, an infamous hot chili maker, working at the stove wearing a dress, apron, hat and scarf. Mama and her 6 children enter the West Texas Fair chili contest and the adventure ends with them meeting a friendly monster from space who helps them. </div>
My inspiration for this challenge is Mama. I have been waiting to sew an <a href="https://www.sisboom.com/store/patterns/angie-dress-pdf-pattern-for-women/" target="_blank">Angie Dress</a> (great name, BTW!) and used the pattern to make a Mama outfit. Perfectly fitting, as I am Angie and my sewing name is Mama Lusco! In addition to my Angie dress, I crafted an Angie apron and will post a tutorial, so check back soon. <br />
Since this is my first Angie, I would typically sew a muslin. This version is a wearable muslin, using navy linen and space fabric from my stash. The fit is not quite perfect, as I will change the dart placement a bit next time, but a very wearable muslin! The lining fabric represents the Space Monster from this book and I used<a href="http://scientificseamstress.blogspot.ca/2013/10/line-angie-and-square-neck.html" target="_blank"> this tutorial from Jeanine for SS</a> to fully line my bodice. I was hesitant to fit my bodice more closely because it has no zips - you wiggle in & out of this one! I chose my size by the measurement chart and the fit is quite good without modification. <br />
I love wearing aprons and always tie one on while in the house or gardening. Our Mama only wore a 1/2 apron, but I'm messy and prefer a full apron. I decided to use a modified Angie front bodice and skirt front to craft this apron. This time, the space fabric is the feature and the lining & pockets are blue linen. It's a little bit sassy with the fitted bodice and fun straps, but fully functional and an apron I will wear often. This apron will make a great bridal shower & birthday gift, so watch for an Angie apron tutorial soon! <br />
I love what Pattern Revolution is doing to end "Selfish Sewing." Reading <a href="http://patternrevolution.com/blog/2014/1/30/talkin-about-a-revolution" target="_blank">this blog post</a> was an "Ah-Ha" moment for me. So much of what we do as wives and mothers is for others. There is no reason to call doing a little sewing myself "selfish." I plan to <a href="http://patternrevolution.com/blog/2014/1/30/talkin-about-a-revolution" target="_blank">take the pledge</a> to end Selfish Sewing, instead choosing Self Care Sewing, guilt-free. Take the pledge! <br />
I was a little late to get sewing, but I joined in the <a href="http://www.sewcanshe.com/" target="_blank">Sew Can She</a> mini-log cabin block sew-along. I am not a quilter but this little 4.5" block looked like one I could manage. Caroline walked us through <a href="http://www.sewcanshe.com/blog/2013/12/30/its-here-the-2014-its-a-new-year-sewalong" target="_blank">selecting fabrics</a>, <a href="http://www.sewcanshe.com/blog/2014/1/7/new-year-sewalong-part-2-lets-cut" target="_blank">cutting our fabrics</a>, <a href="http://www.sewcanshe.com/blog/2014/1/14/its-a-new-year-sewalong-week-3-piecing-and-pressing" target="_blank">sewing the blocks</a> and finally<a href="http://www.sewcanshe.com/blog/2014/1/21/its-a-new-year-sewalong-week-4-make-something" target="_blank"> making something</a>. I appreciated the tutorials and tips!<br />
I have been wanting some new t-shirts and thought my little block would make a nice pocket. I love pattern & tutorials that Its Always Autumn has put together for her <a href="http://www.itsalwaysautumn.com/2013/09/20/the-easy-tee-the-long-sleeve-version.html" target="_blank">Easy Tee</a>. I haven't sewn Autumn's pattern yet, but used her Peter Pan collar on my trusted Jocole <a href="http://www.jocole.net/catalog/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=8_30_35" target="_blank">Mix & Match Ladies shirt</a> pattern. I have made 4 of these Jocole shirts and have adapted the neckline and length for my body. I've added 1.25" to each side of the shoulder and shortened it by 4" in the front, tapering down in the back for a high-low hemline. It's hard to give up a good thing!<br />
I added the pocket to the front shirt panel before starting the shirt construction. Another modification I make to the Jocole pattern is adding clear elastic to the shoulder and arm seams. This was recommended in another free t-shirt pattern, the <a href="http://www.craftsy.com/pattern/sewing/clothing/blank-canvas-tee/10435" target="_blank">Blank Canvas Tee</a> from 3 Hours Past on Craftsy. I like the stability it gives the seams and I add it while serging the seam. After sewing the shoulder seams, it is time to add your collar.<br />
Autumn provides the front collar template and I traced the back neckline, adding 2.5" length to pattern the back collar piece. I really like the bias binding on the neckline and love the punch of color it adds inside. My fabric was a light-weight slub knit, so next time I would add light interfacing to the collar for more structure. <br />
To finish my hems, I serged the edges then slip-stitched them. I wanted to give my shirt a special finish and love the results. All 5 of us are getting over influenza, so you'll have to live with dress-form pictures for this one. <br />
Thanks, Caroline and Sew Can She for a fun sew-along. I learned how to make a mini-log cabin block and how to add a collar to a t-shirt. Sarah and <a href="http://www.sewmamasew.com/" target="_blank">Sew, Mama, Sew</a> are sponsoring a<a href="http://www.sewmamasew.com/2013/11/sew-sweetness-bag-contest-2/" target="_blank"> bag-making contest</a> using Sew Sweetness patterns. There have been dozens of gorgeous bags entered! Check them out<a href="http://www.sewmamasew.com/2013/11/sew-sweetness-bag-contest-2/" target="_blank"> here</a>. <br />
<br />
Here is my version of the free<a href="http://www.sewsweetness.com/2012/10/tutorial-sawyer-bag.html" target="_blank"> Sawyer Bag tutorial</a> from <a href="http://www.sewsweetness.com/" target="_blank">Sew Sweetness</a>. This is a simple, tote style bag that measures approx. 16"L x 14"w x 3"D. It has long accent handle strips and O-ring hardware for some detail. It would be a great beginner bag or quick gift. This bag took about 4 hrs to sew because of the quilting, but otherwise would be about a 2 hr project. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOmmIpTz6FHgEz8raftYENWSzedlrpkDWUkEC38BX5lSzNmo2Syg73nVE8dspSSA0j-iQrtOXjiA9TIQStiFwWuMIo-qLEhJ6BAOhLGQAhrDNGkiELz_yXhhW8qRaBl_NZgFrfZuw4bKA/s1600/Bag+top+zip.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOmmIpTz6FHgEz8raftYENWSzedlrpkDWUkEC38BX5lSzNmo2Syg73nVE8dspSSA0j-iQrtOXjiA9TIQStiFwWuMIo-qLEhJ6BAOhLGQAhrDNGkiELz_yXhhW8qRaBl_NZgFrfZuw4bKA/s1600/Bag+top+zip.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I like to have a bag closure and decided to add a recessed zippered top panel. I used a technique similar to <a href="http://www.charmed-liebling.com/1/post/2013/07/free-tutorial-how-to-add-a-recessed-top-zipper-to-your-handbag.html" target="_blank">this tutorial from Charmed Liebling</a>. It would also be quick & easy to add a magnetic snap closure instead. No pockets are included in the original pattern, so I added a double patch pocket and zippered pocket inside, along with a key clasp. I also substituted D-rings, as I could not find O-rings locally. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXY18VTNJqmjGeQA8pYDk3qJKCEJ5kTU_jNlRfqihUL7p2EZnruLRu78PbuAVhXmScBP5F6XVmAxht8OG3pKiYXsC_1EGyRsbhfto2eDm2dzJqrMcUDrGFQ_vxCOwWVIiDOQsZwxcq-p8/s1600/inside+zip.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXY18VTNJqmjGeQA8pYDk3qJKCEJ5kTU_jNlRfqihUL7p2EZnruLRu78PbuAVhXmScBP5F6XVmAxht8OG3pKiYXsC_1EGyRsbhfto2eDm2dzJqrMcUDrGFQ_vxCOwWVIiDOQsZwxcq-p8/s1600/inside+zip.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I am a very novice quilter, but I was inspired after seeing some Quilt-as-you-go blocks, <a href="http://mypatchwork.wordpress.com/2013/02/16/quilt-as-you-go-improv-patchwork-school-bag/" target="_blank">as shown in this tutorial</a> (also a great bag pattern!) and<a href="http://sewtakeahike.typepad.com/sewtakeahike/2010/03/quilt-as-you-go-quiltalong-part-two-.html" target="_blank"> this one</a>. I had purchased a big bag of designer scraps from the Michael Levine Loft store in LA for only $2 and thought this would be a perfect chance to use them. Most of the fabrics I chose were in greens & blues from Free Spirit designers. Both the front and back panels are quilted.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7LROvvv_kF9Vsy-Jo6zBukxRDlm7dfcddA-rpyfZyllHoW2ordCfjyR1pM1-MQsSidnXz6i19GvUVD3MYkLRJPepoGll5JnteyuwWK-lNICsa7YKeiTDc3ownny02djlhC7gNyKC1Tgs/s1600/bag+quilting+detail.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7LROvvv_kF9Vsy-Jo6zBukxRDlm7dfcddA-rpyfZyllHoW2ordCfjyR1pM1-MQsSidnXz6i19GvUVD3MYkLRJPepoGll5JnteyuwWK-lNICsa7YKeiTDc3ownny02djlhC7gNyKC1Tgs/s1600/bag+quilting+detail.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The quilting was done on cotton batting. I used Pellon 70 to add stiffness and shape to the lining and a heavy interfacing for the straps. I like to use one of my older, mechanical sewing machines, a Viking 1010 or Pfaff 360, for bag-making. They are great for sewing through heavy fabrics & interfacings, something my low-end Janome can't handle. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTQkiT_1jMBCqexbIvroQ_6As50BBh4vS4zfki_iOjqobF8htEAXzGfckCFVul33QFRzrK4fP33AWMmE8ZLgeCNxAZ2AIx4GGkTUFN9P4qqJkyOJifm7xcYlT-oN4R1XN7bBOdWYBaudM/s1600/bag+front+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTQkiT_1jMBCqexbIvroQ_6As50BBh4vS4zfki_iOjqobF8htEAXzGfckCFVul33QFRzrK4fP33AWMmE8ZLgeCNxAZ2AIx4GGkTUFN9P4qqJkyOJifm7xcYlT-oN4R1XN7bBOdWYBaudM/s1600/bag+front+3.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
If one can ignore the not-so-straight quilting and imperfect rectangles, this is a fantastic bag! I am really happy with it. It will be hard to give away this Christmas! <br />
This bag is made using the Sew Sweetness <a href="http://www.sewsweetnesspatterns.com/products/aragon-bag" target="_blank">Aragon pattern found here</a>. The fabrics are a black twill and Oregon State printed quilter's cotton. This pattern calls for Annie's Soft & Stable, but I substituted auto headliner fabric, as it is cheaper and what I had in my stash. I also substituted a med-weight fusible interfacing for the Pellon Shape-Flex, since I'm sewing from my stash and 3 hrs from a fabric store! </div>
This is a large shoulder bag and will be gifted as a diaper bag to my Oregon State-loving cousin. It measures approx. 12" tall x 16" wide x 5.5" deep at the base with oodles of pockets! The outside features a zip pocket on the back side and two elasticized side pockets. I added black piping around the front main panels for extra detail and changed the magnetic snap to a swivel closure. The inside features a large double-pocket with top elastic, two side elasticized pockets and another large zippered pocket. I also added a key holder. The top closure is a large sport zipper. I omitted the back zipper flap as I wanted to show-off the orange zipper and contrasting pocket fabric.</div>
Sara's instructions for bag construction were good, as always. I did struggle with putting this one together, though. Instead of constructing inner & outer bags and sewing them together, this one is constructed with an inside exposed seam, then the inside seam is hidden with bias tape. It was a challenge attaching the bias tape to such a large seam, but I slowly got it done. The bias finish is not as neat as I prefer, but it is mostly hidden in the bag corners. </div>
<a href="http://swoonpatterns.com/shop/rosie-crossbody-bag/" target="_blank">The Rosie bag</a> is a medium-sized bag, approx 8" long x 11" wide x 4" deep. <div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The only modifications I made to the bag itself was adding a patch pocket and key ring clip opposite of the inside zip. I did modify the construction of the zippered pockets, as I prefer to layer the pocket fabric on the bag fabric while sewing the zip opening, as shown in <a href="http://prudentbaby.com/2012/04/baby-kid/tips-tricks/how-to-sew-a-zipper-pocket-2/" target="_blank">this tutorial</a>. There are not as many pictures with the sewing instructions as some other patterns provide, so novice bag-makers may need to reference other photo tutorials if the written instructions are not clear. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
It's <a href="http://www.sewsweetness.com/2013/09/purse-palooza-2013.html" target="_blank">Purse Palooza </a>time at Sew Sweetness! I hope you are following along and enjoying all the purse reviews as much as I am. This is a great excuse to sew some bags for myself and gift-giving. Here's my third bag, the Rockin' Guitar bag.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgF1isTSS4-Dtof8LZmqmpQ5oyOWZTOBdVw8uwmRlqhs2MYVMKXaNiVpcorvgA1JIHUj5Xxy9dTW7Db0zgmMHfasm8y-PjyliO_V4ssKH6_yvn_l-ZOtyo99d24SyrApy5f2nFkDGNUrtk/s1600/Guitar+front.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgF1isTSS4-Dtof8LZmqmpQ5oyOWZTOBdVw8uwmRlqhs2MYVMKXaNiVpcorvgA1JIHUj5Xxy9dTW7Db0zgmMHfasm8y-PjyliO_V4ssKH6_yvn_l-ZOtyo99d24SyrApy5f2nFkDGNUrtk/s400/Guitar+front.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I pinned <a href="http://www.sewsweetness.com/2013/09/purse-palooza-2013.html" target="_blank">this tutorial from Bored and Crafty</a> awhile back and finally made my own guitar bag. I started with this guitar photo and drew a pattern based on the photo. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhD0dZJ6jVGA40uW5QCGONNXl2OfM9UikNvBGgva2dQRVQYJh-dMBZDOyZ3rJ3bHGFI5qZc5ZJLJELeIYGIahpPfYFQcxhUveS59M4IDzXNj9OMa5UFTHtkgwevlkj2_s0s9X9oRvRfi-k/s1600/Guitar+Template.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhD0dZJ6jVGA40uW5QCGONNXl2OfM9UikNvBGgva2dQRVQYJh-dMBZDOyZ3rJ3bHGFI5qZc5ZJLJELeIYGIahpPfYFQcxhUveS59M4IDzXNj9OMa5UFTHtkgwevlkj2_s0s9X9oRvRfi-k/s320/Guitar+Template.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I wish I had the patience to add some more details to my guitar front, but overall I am really happy with the bag. Inside, there is a zippered pocket, patch pocket and key holder loop. I also added a magnetic closure and adjustable strap so it can be worn cross-body or over the shoulder. </div>
The Bored & Crafty guitar bag has little depth, so I added a 3" strip between my front & back panels for depth. I used home decor weight fabrics and Pellon 70 to line the outer fabric. I used a fusible woven interfacing on the lining, so this bag stands at attention!</div>
The Fylerion bag pattern is a <a href="http://www.sewsweetness.com/2012/05/tutorial-video-fylerion-bag.html" target="_blank">FREE pattern, tutorial and video tutorial from Sew Sweetness.</a> I've had this one bookmarked for awhile and thought it would be a good size and shape for a special lady's Christmas gift. Like many Sew Sweetness bags, it is large, measuring 10"long x 15" wide x 2-3" deep....perfect for bringing along lots of stuff! <br />
This is a great pattern to customize. To add some extra detailing, I made piping for the front & back accent pieces. I also added an interior zippered pocket in addition to the patch pocket and switched the single strap to these great purse handles that I've had in my stash for over a year. I think they are very classy and make my Fylerion fancy :) <br />
Sara's instructions were easy to follow and the video tutorial is great for beginners. This is a pattern I will be using again because it is easy to personalize and has a great size and shape. The magnetic snap closure is a favorite of mine because it is simple and works well. <div style="text-align: left;">
Sara at <a href="http://www.sewsweetness.com/" target="_blank">Sew Sweetness</a> is hosting Purse Palooza 2013 through October. I love to make bags and needed to start Christmas gifts, so here is my first Purse Palooza bag - the Dot Dot Dash bag from the <a href="http://www.sewsweetnesspatterns.com/" target="_blank">Sew Sweetness Shop.</a> </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This is a big tote-style bag featuring five front zipper compartments. Notice the curved accents on the lower front panel also have zippers! The top also has a recessed zipper and an adjustable strap lets you wear this one cross-body if desired. I recently won a few patterns from the <a href="http://www.sewsweetnesspatterns.com/" target="_blank">Sew Sweetness shop</a> and this was one that I chose. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I have been hoarding this pink, girly skull fabric that I purchased on clearance from JoAnn Fabrics last year at a clearance sale. I believe it was a bottom-weight apparel fabric, but I purchased it with a cool bag in mind. I thought the fun zippered Dot Dot Dash pattern would be perfect with this fabric and am totally pleased with the result. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCeuAEspMZKIB-NSDEZNWH7xE8CABR1hvZeihl90aJP4zg8wjQvP1GEc6y2_RKHXCe-rePGJnBjh7PDHyMNO4gnfSbGAzRCzegb52WavJCYb2m8smpM-Ey_u47SOlVFdGa0O5N2Wh4tfE/s1600/Pink+skulls+zips.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCeuAEspMZKIB-NSDEZNWH7xE8CABR1hvZeihl90aJP4zg8wjQvP1GEc6y2_RKHXCe-rePGJnBjh7PDHyMNO4gnfSbGAzRCzegb52WavJCYb2m8smpM-Ey_u47SOlVFdGa0O5N2Wh4tfE/s320/Pink+skulls+zips.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I really like the zippered top closure. I used a longer separating zipper and tucked the end between the lining and outer fabrics before finishing the bag. I struggled to get the top zip fabric corners to match exactly, so there is some pleating in those corners, but the zip functions perfectly despite not looking quite perfect. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivzMNWMJxSnQjk3oZ8zFjVAaXdkeIeGKEowdShoTcnIi1SH7wAVKpOykYSsJYxQpFKq_2YR0m-YR-mdsRml9WQClKqvBGuPrruf4Wf2RM6dcjaXREJ0heVyhF_Rvk9NxXOynBWjph5Y0A/s1600/Pink+skulls+bag+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivzMNWMJxSnQjk3oZ8zFjVAaXdkeIeGKEowdShoTcnIi1SH7wAVKpOykYSsJYxQpFKq_2YR0m-YR-mdsRml9WQClKqvBGuPrruf4Wf2RM6dcjaXREJ0heVyhF_Rvk9NxXOynBWjph5Y0A/s320/Pink+skulls+bag+3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The front zips went in easily and Sara does a good job explaining how to insert those long zippers. I thought about omitting the corner piece zips, but am glad I added them. It would be a good place to put some ear buds or a flash drive. The corner accents on the back are simply sewn in place. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The inside of the bag pattern did not include any pockets, so I added a double-patch pocket and key ring clip to one side and a large pocket on the opposite side. I tend to carry my Kindle, water & snacks along with my wallet and essentials, the the big pocket at the bottom will help keep me organized. I also really like the sliding strap feature so this bag can be adjusted for shoulder-bag or cross-body wearing.</div>
<a href="http://www.firmoo.com/includes/templates/firmoo/images/logo.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.firmoo.com/includes/templates/firmoo/images/logo.gif" /></a></div>
<br />
I recently received a pair of <a href="http://www.firmoo.com/" target="_blank">Firmoo </a>eye glasses to review. I have worn glasses for over 20 years and enjoy having several pairs to choose from, so I jumped at the chance for a free pair of glasses. I have ordered from other online eyeglass stores with varied results....I'm pleased to say my experience with<a href="http://www.firmoo.com/" target="_blank"> Firmoo</a> has been very good. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFKVI4Iwartt6i3d8FqyqfbK0WM0gsVg8GH1Ej7TKDjVcuUigcOT2bB0ghOMhg9HxItLKncKTuPIZSesQwqK67f82EeR7OXU4gOKKucTUaM59pjmchQF8iqJ4XuaLfiMsN2kpN8VZdy_o/s1600/2013-03-17+007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFKVI4Iwartt6i3d8FqyqfbK0WM0gsVg8GH1Ej7TKDjVcuUigcOT2bB0ghOMhg9HxItLKncKTuPIZSesQwqK67f82EeR7OXU4gOKKucTUaM59pjmchQF8iqJ4XuaLfiMsN2kpN8VZdy_o/s320/2013-03-17+007.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I had difficulty following the special ordering directions and Firmoo customer service was very helpful and promptly responsed to emails. My eyeglasses arrived about a week after I ordered. The frame selection was not as large as other online retailers, but the frames are trendy and good quality. Mine are regularly a $19 frame and would be worth every penny! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br />
They remind me of my very first pair of eyeglasses, only those were green tortoise shell. Bringing back my geek chic style! <br />
This is a versatile pattern for sizes 12mo-11/12 that includes shorts, capris, regular and extra-long lengths as well as a skirted option. Also included are variations including rouching, cargo pockets, bow cut-outs and ribbon trim. So many ways to customize your leggings!<br />
<br />
I made the extra-long rouched leggings. My free arm made it hard to rouche the inside of the legs, so I only did the outer leg. These are in thermal knit and my big girl loves them! I also made a pair of bike shorts using the pattern. It is definitely a <a href="http://gotopatterns.com/store/" target="_blank">Go-To pattern</a>! <br />
<br />
I was able to test the<a href="http://pixiedustpatterns.com/index.php?url=dresses/leah.php" target="_blank"> Leah Dress</a> from Pixie Dust Patterns awhile back. This is a gorgeous maxi-dress for girls size 12mo-7. This was my first time sewing a <a href="http://pixiedustpatterns.com/login.php" target="_blank">Pixie Dust</a> patterns and the directions were pretty good. The bodice was the only pattern piece to print and the rest is just cutting rectangles. I found the sizing to be very good and comparable to ready-to-wear sizing. My girl likes that the sash is long enough to wrap around the front, as she doesn't like big bows behind her back when sitting. Overall, she likes the dress and it was a good pattern.<br />
I was not able to see a final copy of the pattern to see if my recommendations were used regarding terminology. Nothing is cut on the bias, yet the binding was referred to as "bias tape." Picky of me, but there is a difference. Find more Pixie Dust Patterns on their<a href="http://pixiedustpatterns.com/login.php" target="_blank"> website here</a>. You have to register on the website to see all the patterns - picky of me to think this odd. <br />
We were big winners at the County Fair this year. Mama won 11 blue ribbons, one People's Choice award and other second & third place ribbons. I entered mostly canned goods and garden produce but had 5 garments entered as well. The kids each won a ribon for their entries in art, woodworking and Legos. In all, we won enough to cover our entry fees and fried food! <br />
We were able to spend one week at the Oregon Coast at the end of summer break. It was so relaxing to have an oceanside room and hear the waves crashing. There were large rocks with tide pools, starfish and other fun sea critters nearby. It was a good week! Hard to believe we've been in school for over a month now and it's October already. Time to work on Halloween costumes then on to Christmas gifts!Mama Luscohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14505604512183642440noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1420103162370684942.post-79653144641462619472012-09-30T17:50:00.004-07:002012-09-30T17:50:30.097-07:00Winner!Congratulations, Kristina!
