Super-Sized One-Hour Bag Tutorial

Recently, Sew Can She featured the One Hour Bag tutorial from Ric Rac. This was one of the first bag tutorials that I found but I'd never made it. Sew Can She is having a One Hour Bag sew-along, so I jumped in!

I prefer a bigger shoulder bag, so I super-sized the template. I was out of magnetic snaps, so I improvised with a flap closure with a snap. Flaps usually are enough to keep a bag closed, but the snap will secure it shut if needed. My pocket is also bigger and I sewed it down the middle to make a double pocket. The finished size of my bag is 9.5" tall x 15" wide with a 12" shoulder drop. It's just big enough for my wallet, organizer & Kindle.

This bag took about 2 hours with pressing & topstitching then making & applying the covered buttons.
It's a simple, quick bag. I think these would make great gifts for your favorite friends. I've uploaded a copy of my template here if you'd like to make a Super-Sized One-Hour Bag, too. Crazy Cute Jumper ~ Pattern Review

Hailey Bugs Closet just released her latest pattern, the Crazy Cute Jumper. This versatile jumper is easy to customize by adjusting the length for tunic or dress and mix up the fabrics. Available for sizes 18mo - 12, the bodice is from knit and the other fabrics can be any type! I love the jumbo ric rac trim across the bodice and crossed straps in the back, too. Straps can be attached using snaps or buttonholes - Stacey walks you through either option with great photos & instructions.

For my tunic-length Crazy Cute Jumper, I used knits purchased recently at a JoAnn clearance sale. I didn't have any jumbo ric-rac, so I omitted it. Instead of a wide band, I used a small band of contrasting knit for an enclosed hem. It fits great and is comfy because of the knit bodice. My leggings were made using Jocole's Ruffle Leggings pattern (a new fave!) She's worn this every day that it has been clean for the past two weeks :)

Introducing the Olivia Reverse Knot Dress from Pink Poodle Bows

Alisha from Pink Poodle Bows just released a new pattern, the Olivia Reverse Knot Dress in sizes 6mo-12. This pattern makes it easy for beginners to sew this criss-cross bodice dress. Long straps and two buttonholes in the back let you tie a big bow in the back. Add a contrast band, ribbons, or lace to dress it up. I added a vintage lace trim at the top of my short contrast band and a ribbon hem. I also like the stiffness the ribbon adds to the skirt bottom, giving it a little extra fullness. The only other adjustment I made was to enclose the side & skirt seams inside the bodice lining. Alisha makes this tutorial easy for beginners, so if you want hidden seams you need to know how or find an online tutorial.

The Lil Diva Pants are also now available in big girls sizes, 6-10. They are an easy, wide-leg pant with cute contrast bottom hem. My girl loves them and they only take 1 hr to sew!

New Tote Bags

I recently made the Maddie Handbag, a FREE pattern from Homespun Threads. It was the perfect mid-sized bag! The Homespun Thread blog is a fantastic resource for free tutorials, including dozens for baby items, bags & crafts. Aimee's online Bible Studies are really good, too.

My Maddie Bag is made of denim and Amy Butler Lotus quilting cotton as the liner & accent fabric. It took me just as long to cut & interface my fabrics as it did to sew the thing! I made mine 1.5" taller (13"w x 13"t) and thought it would be a great bag for ladies who like to pack along a Kindle, book or big organizer. I also added pockets across the full width on one side of the lining. It was hard to give this one away, but it was a Christmas present for my mom. I'll definitely be making more of these as gifts & possibly for my shop.

Riley Dress & Ruffle Bottom Pants by PPB

I was excited to see what Pink Poodle Bows has been working on! Alisha from Pink Poodle Bows provided her Fleece Aviator Hat and Ruffle Bottom Pants for big girls, sz 6-10, for me to review. I had purchased a few of her patterns when the shop was brand new and she has come a LONG way!

Ruffle Sleeve Top & Skirt by PPB

Her instructions were very good, there were many helpful photos and the overall design & styling are great. I love the new Quick Pattern option, too. For some of her patterns, PPB provides a single pattern piece for the pattern, like a crotch or arm cut-out that prints on one page, or you have the option to print the entire pattern and tape together. I love my rotary cutter, so I prefer to cut rectanges and use the quick pattern pieces and save lots of paper by not printing the entire template.

Aviator Hats by Pink Poodle Bows

The Fleece Aviator Hat pattern is sized for 0-8 year olds, but I made one for a 10 year birthday party by adding 1/4" around the 8 yr pattern pieces. My bigger-kid hat even fit me, so the pattern is generously sized. I love the options you have with this hat. She provides templates for making an owl hat (with ears two ways), aviator hat with goggles, or a plain fleece hat. I used the owl eye pieces for a fun monster hat. Abby also wanted longer braids, so these were about 24" long. I wish I had blue fleece, because it reminded me of Cookie Monster eyes. This was an easy sew and a 1 hr project that I plan to sew again. Highly recommended!

I also made the Ruffle Bottom Pants for girls sized 6-10. I was worried they wouldn't quite be big enough for my 9 year-old who wears size 12, but the size 10 turned out a bit big. Alisha provides finished measurements for the pants, so be sure to check those to your child or pants that fit well before cutting/sewing. I was late night sewing and skipped this step, so it's my fault they don't fit perfectly. The pattern fits large, though, so measure!

Easy Ruffle Bottom pants & peasant top by PPB

These were also a quick, easy sew, taking about an hour. I narrowed the bottom of the leg pieces by 2" and tapered the difference up to around the thigh (my girl prefers tight pants). I also shortened the ruffle width by 4" to match the smaller leg bottom and added a small 1.5" ruffle to the top of the big ruffle. I love how they turned out! They look good with her (also big) Girls World Anna Tunic and is hippie-chic. I'm anxious to see how often my big girl wears them...I think she looks darling!

Pattern Review ~ Little Lizard King Crown

Liz from Little Lizard King has released another quick, simple, fun accessory pattern - The Crown.

"Make a princess tiara, birthday party hat, or super hero crown with our simple sewing tutorial! Make your own dress up/make believe costume accessory, Christmas crown, or birthday party hat, become a queen or king for a day, or create a Halloween crown. Includes sizing for 3m-adult. "

This pattern was a breeze to put together and sew. It took about an hour from start to finish. Choose 1, 2 or more fabrics, some stabilizer/interfacing, velcro and embelllish as you want. I like the big range of sizes, so you could make them for babies or even adults. I'm thinking one of these may find its way into a White Elephant gift this year :)

I own many of her designs and really love her Tote Bag in 5 sizes. I've made 4 so far as Christmas gifts for the kids teachers and need to make at least one more for a friend. Her Tote Bag is extra-deep, giving it great shape and it's easy to dress up. I added extra pockets inside, a key loop and magnetic closure, making the Medium tote a nice big shoulder bag/tote.

I highly recommend LLK patterns. Liz uses testers for all her patterns, so the directions are clear and the patterns will fit well. Find them on her website for instant download, on Etsy as a top-ranked seller, her blog, or on Facebook. I'm excited to see the coming Princess Dress!

Printing a photo book will cost approx. $1/page, so it's also much cheaper than traditional scrapbookings. It's really a great value for a fun, easy to use program. To make a Christmas card, I started with a blank, landscape page in MMS. After designing the page, export it as a .jpeg file to your computer. Upload the .jpeg to a photo site, like Snapfish & Shutterfly and use it there on a blank card or postcard. Snapfish has a sale using code CYBER50 to get 50% off (expires 12/3/11). I like that I was able to design the postcard exactly how I wanted it and not have to settle for designs I didn't really love. I'd love to see how you are using MMS in ways other than for digital scrap pages!

A New Jacket & Pattern Review ~ Lily Bird Studio

I'm in love with this little coat! I've made several jackets for my Nugget but this one has more details than the others I've sewn. The jacket is from Lily Bird Studio and called the Mona Coat. It has a faux- double button front, storm flaps on front & back, big collar, a full lining and wrist cuff straps. The Mona Coat comes in sizes 12 mo-8 yrs.

I love all the details Cecilia has added to this coat! From the gathered sleeves to shoulder patches to double-stitching the outer seams, this coat is boutique-cute. I made mine with stretch denim outer fabric and quilting cottons for the storm flaps and lining. This would be darling in corduroy as well or just quilting cottons for a spring jacket. You have endless options playing with fabrics for all the many pieces of this coat.

I was surprised how easily this coat came together. Cecilia did an excellent job explaining the construction proces step-by-step. As she says, "it's not hard, just a long process." I would highly recommend this pattern but plan on it being a several-day project. I sewed 1-2 hours a night for several days to get this one finished. This was my first collar with a stand!

Pattern Review ~ Playtime Girl by Ellie Inspired

This was my first time sewing a pattern by Ellie Inspired. I've purchased a few, but haven't actually sewn one until getting to test the new Playtime Girl pattern. Playtime Girl is a comfy knit dress with single or double layer sleeves and optional bottom ruffle. It comes in sizes 4-12 and is a quick, 2-hour project.

While the construction process was a bit different than I'm used to, the results were beautiful. I wouldn't recommend this as your first knit pattern but if you've sewn a few knit projects this should be no problem. Laura's illustrations are very helpful and the sizing was perfect.

Featured Designer ~ Jocole & Crossover Tunic Review

Have you seen a Jocole PDF pattern? . I think I'm in PDF pattern heaven!!! There are many PDF pattern-makers that I stand behind but Jodi Jean would be the captain of my dream team. I was very impressed with the helpful tips for working with knits, digitized pattern pieces, excellent instructions & photos. Jocole PDF patterns also include a Quick Guide for sewing, providing step by step instructions without the photos. This is very handy for more experienced seamstresses or those who don't want to print the entire PDF file.

I recently tested Jodi Jean's newest pattern, the Crossover Tunic for my almost 9 year-old. She loves it! This top took about an hour from start to finish. It is very versatile, including sizes 12mo-14 and options for hip, tunic, and dress lengths. This pattern is made using stretch knit, so it is so comfortable your girl will be wanting to wear one everyday! I've already asked Jodi Jean for a mommy-version.

Along with PDF patterns, Jocole also offers custom women's clothing and modest undershirts perfect for layering. If we weren't struggling to pay two mortgages, I would order one of everything! My favorite piece is the Graceful Cowl Neck Dress with Obi wrap belt.

Pattern Review ~ Malibu Mega Ruffle Dress by Tenderfeet Stitches

This was my first time sewing for Amanda of Tenderfeet Stitches. What a great pattern! This is the ultimate in boutique sewing - layers of ruffly goodness.

The Malibu Mega Ruffle Dress is a versatile pattern that you will be able to use for years.

Included features:
Baby Girl Sizes: 0-3m, 3-6m, 6-9m, 9-12m, 12-18m, 18- 24m
Toddler Girl Sizes: 2T, 3T, 4T, 5T
Big Girl Sizes: 4,5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10,
Instructions and charts for both ribbon and fabric ruffles
Optional one or two layer skirt
Optional bodice tuxedo accent with or without ruffles

My only disappointment with this pattern was the finishing of the bodice. This dress has a lined bodice, so if you'd prefer a cleaner look inside the dress, you'll have to hide the bodice/skirt seam by lifting the bodice liner while attaching the outer bodice to the skirt, then pin or hand-sew bodice lining before topstitching the bodice/skirt seam. I'm just picky - if I spend 4 hours sewing, I want the inside to be as pretty as the outside :)

I'm very happy with Amanda's instructions and detailed pictures. Her sizing charts are helpful in making sure you get the right size for your girl. Even a beginner could sew this pattern! Infant Car Seat Cover for Baby Fritz

I am so relieved to finally have Baby Fritz, my first great-nephew's infant seat finished. My niece is expecting in early December so I needed to get this project done. After looking for tutorials, I found this very good one from Make It And Love It and also purchased one from Puking Pastilles. Kayla's car seat was a different style but the principles of how to deconstruct and reconstruct were covered by these tutes.

It went smoothly except for the canopy. The fit was off on the side sections so I had to cut out a triangle and patch in a bigger piece. I think it's camoflaged pretty well.... bad joke :) The worst part was spending 5 hours ripping apart every seam and labeling each piece so I could make pattern pieces. I used my trusty old Kenmore to sew through the thick parts. You will need a heavy-duty sewing machine and sz 16 needles if using home-dec weight fabrics because some parts of the seat will be very thick. Also, purchase extra-wide bias tape. My tape was too narrow so I re-used some of the original binding.

I'm really happy with the final product. I can't wait to see pictures of Baby Fritz in his hunter orange & camo infant seat!

Pattern Review ~ Tie A Bow Around Me Peasant Dress by Fun4Me2

Introducing......... the Tie a Bow Around Me Peasant Dress from Fun4Me2. I was able to test this pattern for Dee and it is a darling dress loaded with options. It comes in sizes 6mo - 7 and has a roomy fit to grow with your girl. This PDF pattern gives directions for making a bubble hem or single layer skirt, apron option, and single or double layer flutter sleeves. Dee also includes many examples & cutting guides for each of her sample dresses.

I made a size 7 for my Nugget. She normally wears a 6/7 so I played it safe and sewed up a size. The fit on this pattern is generous and my dress was too big for Nugget. I'm hoping it will fit next spring!

To compensate for the extra width around the waist, I wrapped the bow around the front and it is darling! Wear it either way - bow in the front or back.

My favorite part of this dress is the double flutter sleeve. I also love how you could mix up coordinating fabrics and think the apron would look great with a border & added applique. You can get so many looks from this pattern and it's a great value at $4.50!

Pattern Review ~ Oh So Chic Harlow Monroe by Hailey Bugs Closet

I recently tested the Oh So Chic Harlow Monroe dress from Hailey Bugs Closet. Quite a mouthful, but what a cute, simple dress! This is a very versatile pattern with sizes 12mo-14/16 girls and it comes with tunic and dress length options for each size. Wear it year round - alone in the summer or layered over a t-shirt or turtleneck the rest of the year.

Abby is wearing the 10/12 tunic tester version but the finished pattern for tunics was going to be shortened a few inches. She says it's very comfy to wear and likes the big neck tie and contrast band at the bottom. It's a quick and easy sew like a pillowcase dress in a more modern style.

I've seen Christmas fabric versions and how about this Halloween version? Pretty cute!

Emma's Dress Pattern Review

I tested another beautiful dress for my big girl, Emma's Dress from Lily Bird Studio.

Abby loves the paper-bag styled waist and removable sash. The sizing on the bodice was perfect and she didn't want to take this dress off! Emma's Dress is sized for 2-10 years. Abby normally wears a 9/10 and the 10 years was a great fit. The final pattern was lengthened to the dress hits at the knee, not a mini like my pictures. She just wears little shorts underneath so she can still play on the monkey bars :)

County Fair 2011

Where did summer go? While I miss the carefree days at home with the whole family, I'm a little relieved to have Andy back to work and the older kids in school. I love a predictable routine!

The County Fair marks the last week of summer vacation here. We've made a tradition of taking a day to enjoy the food, rides & exhibits at Fair. Abby entered her drawstring bag and won Best of Show and a blue ribbon. She was so proud!

Mama won High Point Award, 6 blue ribbons and 2 red ribbons. We won almost enough money to pay for all of the junk food we ate!

Pattern Review ~ Kate's Dress by Lily Bird Studios

I was so thrilled to finally sew a Lily Bird Studios pattern! I've been a fan of Cecilia's designs since I first found her as So Tei-Tei. This newest pattern is called Kate's Dress, a sweet A-line with two different yoke options and ruffle sleeves. This design is for sizes 12 mo- 8yrs. This dress could be worn in the fall and winter with a long-sleeved tee underneath or in lighter fabrics it's perfect for spring & summer!

I made a size 6 and size 7 for my littlest Nugget. She normally wears a size 6 and LBS's 6yrs fit perfectly! The fit was just right around her chest, arms & the length hits just below the knee...darling! You would never believe that English is a 2nd language for Cecilia - her instructions are excellent. Helpful photos will guide you through each step of the sewing.

Pattern Review ~ Olivia Shirt Dress by My Taylor Made

I was excited to sew the latest pattern from My Taylor Made, the Olivia Shirt Dress. This sweet dress buttons up the fron and has both long and short sleeved options. It has a circle yoke neck and comes in sizes 2-7. Shannon's instructions & pictures are easy to follow, so don't be intimidated!

This was my first time sewing a shirt dress...I've never even sewn a button-up shirt! Thankfully, I'm comfortable with my button-hole feature and this dress came together quickly - a 3-4 hour project. As long as you can sew a button hole, you can make this dress!

The only change I needed was to enlarge the sleeve cuff. Make sure you test the piece on your model before sewing it on the dress. My buff little one has big arms!

Easy Ruffle Shrug ~ Pattern Review

Easy Ruffle Shrug

Caroline has done it again! She just released the Easy Ruffle Shrug, a simple, comfy, adorable pattern for girls. Like most of Caroline's patterns, this pattern has only one pattern piece, making it a quick, easy project - 2 hours or less! This pattern is made for knits so it is very comfortable to wear and forgiving to sew. It includes sizes 12mo - 12. I love the sizing for big girls!

I tested this pattern using a t-shirt knit with no closure. Abby love, love, loves her shrug! It makes me wonder if I could pull-off this look, too?!

Another pattern of Caroline's that I have reviewed is her Chloe knit skirt. This is one of my favorite skirts this summer! I sewed it using a brown light-weight slub knit. It is so comfortable that I love wearing it. This pattern shows you how to draft a pattern to fit your body perfectly. She also give tips for getting a perfectly-even hemline. Caroline's instructions are excellent and I love the professional design of her tutorial & pattern pieces. Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of my skirt, but here's a few from the pattern listing.

I found that my slub knit was very stretchy, so I decreased the width of my pattern pieces to make up for the extra stretch...a quick & simple alteration to make it work. I made mine knee-length with matching bloomers to wear underneath :) I'm not a fan of wearing slips in the summer, so long bloomers underneath work great to cover my unmentionables and prevent chafing. I really should have been born 100 years ago :)

Looking for a sweet, customizable, grow-with-her dress? This is it!

I was able to sew the new Forever Maxi Dress as a pattern tester for Hailey Bugs Closet. This was a fairly quick sew at about 4 hours from printing to finished dress. It has a good size range from 12mo - 10. It's a versatile pattern which includes instructions on how to make a halter version, simple ties or ruffle sleeves. Also included are 3 different hem options as well as tips on wearing this dress as a maxi skirt. I love projects that the girls can wear for years!

It feels so good to be home! The boys are at football camp this week, so the girls and I had some fun playing in our pool today. While Nugget was nappying, Abby & I decided it was a good time to sew!

We decided on a simple drawstring backpack. She used a Joel Dewberry charm pack to piece together the outer bag and added a pocket to the lining. She learned how to use a seam ripper to straighten out a few crazy seams :) She is already planning her next bag and did great!

We made this bag without a pattern but here are a few free tutorials if you or your kids would like to sew one. Just a quick note to say the family & I survived my week at WyldLife camp! It was a crazy, busy, fun week of 18 hour days trying to keep up with my middle-school girls. It was fabulous - thanks for all the prayers and well-wishes :) After sleeping most of this weekend, I think I'm ready to head back to work tomorrow. I hope to share some sewing projects before leaving for vacation in July...

Week 6 Finale ~ Country Fair

Thanks so much for following along! I'm happy to be finished with Extreme Makeover: Fabric Edition and earned 2nd place in the end. It was a great motivator to get my summer sewing done.
Here was my finale entry....

Our theme, 'Country Fair' screamed 'Americana' to me. What's more American than red, white & blue and a lazy day at the fair? I created easy-wearing casual clothes & accessories for the girls and I to wear on our day at the Country Fair.

These are coordinating head scarfs, rolled rosette clippies and a lunch money cuff. I actually made 3 of these cuffs but the girls won't take theirs off! Find the lunch money cuff tutorial here at Lemon Squeezy Home.

This my big girl's Country Fair outfit - a fun, comfy peasant top, "Miss Madeline" from The Handmade Dress, and matching ruffled capri pants from Whimsy Couture. She also has a money cuff and rosette headband.

My little girl loves her new ruffle-sleeved top with side sash bows made using the Ruffle Sleeve Top & Skirt pattern from Pink Poodle Bows. Her pants have a royal blue band at the bottom to match the top, the same pattern as above by Whimsy Couture. A matching head scarf tops off her outfit.

This is an easy-wearing knit tank with gentle gathers at the bust, square-necked yoke and elastic band at the hip. Matching knit shorts will keep me comfy all day long. Rolled knit rosette clippies and Mama's Ruffled Shoulder Bag (tutorial on my blog here) finish off my outfit.

I'm happy to have sewn through 68+ yards of fabric in the past 6 weeks! I have a HUGE stash of fabric, so it doesn't really look like I've even made a dent. Living 3 1/2 hours from the nearest fabric store has made me stock up when I find a good sale since it's months between my visits to the city. I have tried to tidy-up my sewing room and keep my cupboards organized. Extreme Makeover: Fabric Edition has motivated me to finish projects that I've been putting off. Mommy & Me Trench Coats

Our challenge last week was Puddle Jumping, so I thought of rain jackets. Mine was made from 'Chic & Simple Sewing' by Christina Haynes, the Trench Coat. The book only has patterns through size 12, so I added about an inch all the way around to make my own XL size. This was a super simple jacket to make. I also made the 25" belt from another project in the book.

Had I known this book was so simple, I probably wouldn't have purchased it. No button holes or zippers...very simple, beginner sewing projects for smaller, younger women. If you can rock a baby doll dress, then you'd love this book. Larger gals like me are not going to find many appropriate patterns. I only paid $10 though, so it was worth it for the few patterns I will use.

Mally's jacket is from DMK, the Little Red Riding Hood jacket. I love the removable hooded cape. The cape is also reversible, so you get 3 looks in 1 coat!

Gather & Ruffle With Your Serger

This week, Nicole from Cole's Corner and Creations has shared a new PDF tutorial for Ruffling Like a Pro With Your Brother 1034d Serger. I'm excited to try this technique. When ruffling lots of yardage, I use a ruffler attachment on my sewing machine. This works great but is a little cumbersome to attach & remove. Using my serger looks faster, so I'll definitely be trying this!

Mama's Extra-Ordinary Looks

I survived another week! Our theme last week was Extra-Ordinary. At our house, nothing is more ordinary than jeans and t-shirts. I took my inspiration in turning ordinary pieces into extra-special clothing.

This double-bustle denim skirt may be my favorite thing ever! Bustle skirts are big in blog-land right now, so I turned too-short jeans into a skirt with bustles in the front and back. I also removed the back pockets and replaced them with new fabric ones. There are several good bustle-skirt tutorials out there ( here) if you need some help getting started.

I also made two jeans aprons from one pair of adult jeans, inspired by this tutorial. Love mine!

For myself, I refashioned two plain tank tops into simple summer dresses. Oodles of t-shirt dress tutorials out there, so Google it if you need more instruction to make your own. I prefer adding a waist band rather than have all those gathers at my waist, so that's how these were made.

I love the asymmetrical hem on this one!

While I'm being brave and showing off my dresses, here are a few picts of my whimsy sundress from last week. The belt band gives me lots of options.

I bet you recognized my girls' t-shirt refashions! I used Lil Blue Boo's Sienna dress pattern for Mally's tunic and a basic shorts pattern, using t-shirt material. Abby's top is McCalls 6315 and the skorts tutorial is here.

My Projects~Extreme Makeover: Fabric Edition Week 1

Did you guess which projects were mine?
Our theme for week 1 was Wildflowers & Whimsy...I'm short on wildflowers but think I caught some whimsy in my sewing this week.

For starters, I have had this home dec fabric for over a year, waiting to be sewn into curtains for my daughters' room. It's bright, fun colors made me think 'Modern Whimsy.' Using the fabulous tab-top lined curtain tutorial here, I've sewn curtains for my family, living, bedroom and now girls' room. They are fully lined and used 8 yds of 54" fabric.

They have also been needing a duvet cover, so I pieced together the rest of my curtain fabric, three coordinating quilting fabrics, and a bed sheet from my stash using a total of 9.5 yd of 44" fabric and 4 yd of 54" fabric in this piece.

For some extra whimsy, I used the scraps to make a reversible pennant and added "Dream" since I figuratively want my girls to dream big and literally wish them sweet dreams. I was inspired by this tute from Polka Dot Chair blog. The pennant used 1 yd of 44" fabric and a pack of bias tape.

I've been wanting some summer dresses, so I made this easy, flowing sundress in a free-spirited, blue-toned knit. It's simply a tube with shirring around the chest and low-waist. I added straps and a coordinating wide belt in turqoise, for a total of 2 yds of 54" fabric. I've worked every day this week and am grumpy, so no photos of mama in this little number!

During our twice-yearly trip to Wal-Mart last weekend, I found this juniors t-shirt for $1.00. I saw potential and brought it home to cut off the long sleeves to short, cut some length off and added a knit bubble skirt. I'd recently seen this tutorial from The Cottage Home and used the technique for this dress. Instead of attaching the waistband, you attach the skirt directly to the shirt. Easy peasy! Add a fabric pom-pom pin and sash belt and you have a whimsy-chic dress your big girl loves! I don't count the t-shirt yardage since it wasn't really altered much but used 1 yd of 54" fabric in the skirt & accessories.

If you haven't been counting, in week one I used a grand total of 15 yards of 54" fabric and 10.5 yd of 44" fabrics this week! My total of 25.5 yards placed me in first for total yardage for week one :) I'm working all week and on call, so I don't think I'll be doing much sewing this week, but I'll give it my best. Hope you follow along!

Extreme Makeover: Fabric Edition Week 1 Voting

I haven't blogged in the past week; here is the reason - Extreme Makeover: Fabric Edition! Not really knowing what to expect, I sent in a few pictures of my fabric stash to Bree and April after reading about their upcoming Extreme Makeover: Fabric Edition contest. To my surprise, I was chosen to participate! Here's a sneak peek of the fabrics I've been stashing...I will defend myself on the basis that I live 3 1/2 hours from the nearest fabric store!

My personal goal in this stash-busting competition is to sew things my family really needs while working through my stash. Big sigh......Ever have those tasks you've been dreading and avoiding? I finally conquered one of those and it sure feels good! My stash of feed sacks has been growing, so it was finally time to sew up some eco-tote bags. Bright, shiny & newly listed in Mama's Etsy shop!

Also new in the shop are flower rings to match my dahlia and rosette earrings. I have a white dahlia ring ready to ship or you can choose the color:

LA Spring Break 2011 & Fashion District

We're back! After a whirlwind month of March, it sure feels good to be home again! The last 10 days we've been on Spring Break and for us, that meant a mission trip with the church youth group to Southern California. We drove 18 hours straight to Burbank, CA on the 18th and stayed in a church there. We were able to serve at a homeless shelter, rescue mission and retirement home for retired missionaries 3 of the days then had a fun day at Disneyland. Other fun adventures included Hollywood (in a torrential downpour!), Venice Beach, Glendale Galleria mall and best of all.....the LA Fashion District!!!

My friend, Jill Williamson, and I took the 3 little girls to the Fashion District to check out the deals I've seen blogged about. It did not disappoint! I'm talking $1.99/yd fabrics in small shops, Michael Levine's amazing selection in fabric store style and the incredible Michael Levine Loft where fabric is sold for $2.50 a pound!

I felt feral digging through bins in search of fabrics here. In addition, they have rolls of fabric and notions along the walls. If we didn't have the little girls along, I could have spent a whole day here. In the end, I purchased 49 lbs at the Loft plus some notions and a bag of designer scraps for $2!!! The challenge was carrying it 2 blocks back to the parking garage...I was sore for a few days after that one :)

I've finished our 8 loads of family laundry and am starting to wash the fabrics now. It's an amazing amount of fabric...it just makes me smile :) If you have a chance to visit the Los Angeles area, make time to visit the Fashion District. Bargains galore!!!

Dr. Seuss Day ~ Cat in the Hat Tutorial

If you've been with me for over a year, this is old news...If you're new to Mama Lusco, this fun hat comes together in about an hour. Print off your pattern pieces, pull out the felt, and stitch up a fun hat for your kiddo to wear to school for Dr. Seuss Day!

My kids are excited for Dr. Seuss' birthday and Read Across America Day, March 2. Their school is providing green eggs & ham for breakfast and inviting families to come participate in reading programs that day. They have been encouraged to dress like their favorite Dr. Seuss character, so Drew decided he wanted a Cat in the Hat striped hat. Here's the picture I used for my replica:

Mama Lusco's Dr. Seuss Hat Tutorial/Pattern

fits most elementary age - small adult heads

Supplies:

1/2 yd red felt

1/2 yd white felt

1/2 yd lining fabric ( I used part of a pillowcase)

Sewing notions inclucing: Sewing machine, Thread (red recommended), Scissors, Pins, Rotary cutter & mat (recommended)
Pattern pieces for hat top and hat brim:
Dr. Seuss Hat Top
Dr. Seuss Hat Brim
Please add 1/4" seam allowance around pattern pieces

1. Cut pieces for hat body: Cut 3 - 3"w x 22"l from Red Felt
Cut 2 - 3"w x 22"l from White Felt
(Cut lining fabric after above pieces sewn together to form hat body)

2. Starting with a strip of red felt, sew with right sides together alternating between red & white strips.

3. Place hat body onto lining fabric as a template and cut out lining. Baste around all edges, connecting hat body to hat liner. With right sides of hat together, sew up side seam. You now have a tube shape for the completed hat body.

4. Using Hat Top pattern piece, cut 1 Red Felt and 1 lining fabric. Baste around edge.

5. Turn hat body with liner out and pin to hat top with liner up. Sew around, connecting hat top to hat body.

6. Cut out Hat Brim pieces: 2 - White Felt. (see picture above in step 4)
( I did not have enough white felt, so I cut 1 piece red and 1 piece white)
Place right sides together and sew around outside edge. Turn right-side-out and baste around inside edge.

7. With hat and brim right-side-together, pin brim to hat and sew around.

8. (Optional) Trim seams down to about 1/8" and overcast or serge.

Put on your hat and grab a good book!

Sew Serendipity by Kay Whitt of Serendipity Studio is a fun, useful book that I'm glad to have in my sewing library. Unlike my other library titles, this one is just for women. From the publisher:

Village Frock Look-Alike Tutorial

Do you love the Sugar City Village Frock as much as I but can't get your hands on a pattern?

Patterns have been sold out for a year now but once in awhile you can find a copy for sale or trade. I think I found a size 6 tracing today over at the Flickr pool.

Check out this tutorial from Simply Together for the Simply Sweet Frock. So darling! It has a gathered neckline like the SC Village Frock and would be easy to add a button placket and gathered arms like the original. Sizes 2,4,5 provided in this tutorial.

Kaitlyn's Dress

Thanks for the well-wishes as I head back to work. I survived the first week and am looking forward to the work & people I'll meet.

I wanted to share a dress I made from my t-shirt stash, Kaitlyn's Dress. This was a birthday gift for a special little friend. Her family shares their old t-shirts with me, so I used a few of them in this outfit.

I started upcycling with t-shirts by using Lil Blue Boo's Hoodie and Sienna dress patterns. My girls are now bigger than the patterns, so I've started drafting my own. I really like the circle skirt on this one! I also made matching shorts to wear underneath so she can play on the monkey-bars :)

Have you caught the upcycling bug yet? My t-shirt stash is about as big as my woven fabrics!

Slowing Down

Mama's life is going through a transition again...After enjoying the last 1 1/2 years as a SAHM with my youngest daughter, I'm heading back to work. Circumstances have changed here and it's necessary that I start working again. I'm having mixed feelings about this. I love being at home with my big baby girl and love working as a registered nurse. I just don't like that it feels forced upon me. Long story short, our renters aren't paying their rent and we just can't keep paying 2 mortgages on 1 teacher's salary. It's a risk we took - building a 2nd home before the 1st one sold - and unfortunately the stakes have turned against us.

As I transition back to a working mom, my sewing and blogging will suffer for awhile. After a month or so, I'll only be working part-time and hope to be back to my usual hobbies again. Please stick with me through this transition. If you're a believer, I'd appreciate your prayers for our family to adjust quickly.

In addition to heading back to work, my computer was infected with the Antivirus Virus again. This is the 2nd time with this virus and we cannot get it completely removed. It redirects to a fake Antivirus.NET page and takes over the computer processes. It came from an infected PDF pattern download, so I'm going to be very leery of downloads in the future. I have a new computer coming this week, but until it comes later this week you probably won't hear from me.

New Earring Colors in the Shop

Oops! I Did It Again

Yes, I did it again, only this time with my husband's blessing! He found this amazing vintage White Rotary sewing machine in a red cabinet with a matching stool on Craigslist in a nearby (1 1/2 hours away) town. Yep, that's a near-by town out here in the mountains of Eastern Oregon :)

The cabinet is so beautiful. The pictures don't do it justice. It's hardwood, painted black with a red wash. It opens up on both sides of the machine and the little stool is darling with rounded corners. The drawers open smoothly and it was filled with treats - 3 boxes of original attachements, two owners manuals & extra bobbins. The only attachment missing is the zipper foot!

The machine works beautifully! This White Rotary Series 77 was manufactured in 1939 in Cleveland, Ohio for White. One owners manual says 'Domestic Series 153' and is an identical machine. This machine was made to rival the Singer Featherweight and resembles the Featherweight in styling. No fancy decals here; this baby has a textured metal body that doesn't chip or scratch. I think I may abandon my modern sewing machine in favor of these oldies :) They are so powerful and sew through anything without lugging down. My dear cheap Janome may soon only be used for button holes :)

If you're a regular reader, you may remember my previous vintage sewing machine find, the Ward's Signature. I found a set of cams & attachments on Ebay that originally came with this machine. Now I have 23 decorative stitches for that machine!

The hubby's catching my vintage sewing machine bug...he found this one and told me to call and want to put all my beauties on display...Pretty cool to have a hubby support my habit!

Quick Birthday Gifts & Note-Taker Mini-Tutorial

My kiddo #2 had two birthday parties last weekend. Her little friends digged their art cases, so we decided on little note-takers this time - similar but faster to sew. I didn't quickly find a tutorial to fit my 5x8 notepads, so here's what I came up with:

Note-Taker to fit 5"w x 8"h notepads
1. -Cut 1 outer fabric, 1 lining fabric, 1 interfacing at 13"h x 13"w for main case
- Cut 2 outer fabrics, 1 interfacing at 4h" x 3"w for flap closure
2. Iron on or baste interfacing to main fabric of case and flap. Add trims or applique if desired. Add velcro to the flap and outer fabric (place about 2" down and 1" in from right side edge of outer fabric.)
3. Place main fabrics of flap right sides together and sew around both short ends and one long end. Turn and press. Pin finished flap about 2" down from top edge of right side of your outer fabric. Match up unfinished edges of flap and the outer fabric.
4. Place lining fabric on top of outer fabric & flap with right sides together and sew around edges with 1/4" seam, leaving about 4" open to turn.
5. Trim corners, turn right side out and press. Fold up your bottom edge by 4", pin and sew around all edges to secure bottom pocket and topstitch the edge.
6. Find center of the pocket. To the right of center, mark lines on pocket about 1" apart for pencil pockets. Sew down these lines, backstitching at top and bottom.
7. Insert your 5" x 8" note pad, pencils & enjoy!

Do not attempt this on little sleep at midnight! I sewed the pencil pockets on the side of my embroidery the first time! Thankfully, I have a close, friendly relationship with my trusty seam-ripper.

I was happy to finally finish the 'Not Just Another Pretty Purse' from Sew A Straight Line blog. This one has been on my To-Sew list since it was published in Oct. 2010. I love the chic lines of this bag and it's big enough for my wallet, planner, zip pouch and a sippy! The finished dimensions on this bag are about 18"w x 8"h x 3"d. The tutorial & pattern are available as a free PDF near the bottom of the post. Well worth the time! Here's Mama's version...

These little bags have lots of detail and took about 4 hours each. This is for a medium-sized shoulder bag that measures approx. 12"h x 11"w x 2.5"d. I've read online a few times about Big Deal.com. It's an online auction site where you can get new electronics & more for a fraction of the retail price. The catch is, you have to buy bids to then bid on the items. You may need to spend $100 bidding to win an SLR digital camera for $15. Net savings = $600+. Ipads are selling for less than $100! I've been wanting a Kindle reader so when I saw them selling for $8, I wanted to jump in the bidding. Must-Sew Spring Patterns

I've officially got Spring Fever! I received the Threads newsletter this morning (new McCalls patterns) and Spring Ottobre for kids yesterday and am full of ideas for must-sew patterns. Here are a few on my list:

And now the Ottobre must-sews...I honestly have not made anything from the mag (ever!) but I love the designs. I need to get over worrying about conversions from metric, tracing & adding seam allowances, and just sew some!

Can you tell I loved this issue?!! I'm not sure if I'll renew my subscription, though. I'm not sure it's worth the hefty price since I haven't sewn any of them yet. If I was comfortable sewing them, it would be well worth it. I guess I need to try a few before my gift subscription expires in May. Any other new designs you are dying to sew?

Things That Make You Go Hmmmm....

Have you ever been really disappointed with a pattern? I had really high hopes for a darling dress pattern and it just did not turn out well. The under arm fit was much too small, causing it to bunch up and pull across M's chest...unwearable. She was not a happy model!

I don't have high expectations for free online tutorials because they are FREE. When I'm purchasing a pattern, I expect it to fit well. The more I pay, the more I expect. Am I sounding totally unreasonable here?

I have a group of PDF pattern makers that I adore. Even a few who trust me enough to let me be a pattern tester. When in doubt, designers, please have your patterns tested in all sizes so a blogger doesn't write a ranting post about it :)

Thankfully, I was able to add an oval patch under each arm to widen and lengthen the poor fit. I don't have a picture of the "fix", but it looks good now. I feel better now. Sorry for the complaining...I think I'm extra hormonal today. While I'm feeling b#@!*y, do you know of patterns to avoid? Misery loves company.

Spring Dresses & Kimono

I just wasted 2 hours playing with Picnik photo editing on Flickr :) It was really fun, though! It all started with this photo...Mally did NOT want to smile while modeling her new Miss Mary from The Handmade Dress.

This one is too much fun to not share...the mustache covers that pout perfectly!

I did get a few sweet pictures amongst the pouty ones...

Now for the details. The pattern is Miss Mary from Samantha at The Handmade Dress. All of her patterns fit so well and sew up in about 2 hours. The very first pattern I purchased when I started sewing 3 years ago was Miss Madeline. It's still a go-to around here. Miss Molly was Mally's favorite summer dress and Miss Lily was her Christmas dress this year. Back to this one - it fits perfectly. Abby is wearing the A-line view B in size 10 and Mally's is view A (gathered skirt) in size 5. I shortened Abby's to the size 5 length so she can wear it as a tunic over leggings as well. Mally's was also shortened by 5". I highly recommend this pattern for your big or little girls. The fabric is Tutti Frutti from JoAnn Fabrics 2009.

Before making these dresses, I had made a ManiMina Chic Kimono from the same fabrics. I had planned for this to be a tunic over matching bloomers but the neckline was too big to wear alone. I LOVE this pattern as a jacket but it wasn't quite right for a dress - Emilie does offer a Ruffle Kimono Dress pattern that I love but it's too small for my chica. It does work great as a spring jacket with her new Miss Mary dress, though!

I also made the Kimono reversible by adding ties to both sides of the jacket. Love it! I wish I had a pic of the bloomers...They are the pink & dark pink striped fabric and from the Whimsy Couture bloomer pattern. WC was the second e-pattern maker I found and I own most of her designs as well. If you are a new sewer, I highly suggest trying e-patterns for their great step-by-step pictures and instructions. Great for visual learners like myself!

It's still snowy outside here in the mountains of Eastern Oregon, but I've got Spring on my mind :)

Easing into 2011

I'm easing back into the daily routine now that the kiddos are back to school (except #3) and the hubby is teaching/coaching again. Most of December was spent on the road after a week hunting then a week with my family before Christmas and a week with the hubby's family after Christmas. I'm so glad to be home!

This beast is the latest vintage machine to join my fleet. It was a gift from my MIL, thanks to her junquing :) It's a Montgomery Wards Signature Model URR 292, a zig-zag machine with 24 cams for decorative stitches. I'm pretty sure it was made by Juki in the 60's. This is the heaviest machine I have ever moved! After some cleaning, oiling and re-wiring, I'm excited to see how she sews. I have new belts and cams on the way.

I'm working at deep cleaning the house before starting any more major sewing projects. I'd like to make a new shoulder bag, some feed bag totes, and a few outfits for #3. I'm also starting a deliberately healthy eating plan - AKA DIET - to lose the weight I never did last year :) Mama's going to be grumpy for a few days while my body adjusts to no simple sugars!
